This question is of utmost importance because the Lord Jesus said, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). Clearly this is not an option, it is an absolutely necessity for anyone desiring to enter into heaven. We cannot get to heaven by turning over a new leaf, but only by receiving a new life. We cannot get to heaven by the reformation of our old life, but only by the regeneration of a new life.

To be "born again” is to be born of God, to born from above and to be born spiritually. We must be born spiritually because we are all born into this world spiritually dead in sin (Rom. 5:12). Physical life is a natural birth caused by natural means while spiritual life is a supernatural birth caused by the Spirit of God. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" (John 3:6). Physical life requires the seed of a man and the egg of a woman. Spiritual birth requires the Spirit of God and the Word of God (James 1:16-17; 1 Pet. 1:23). Those who have not been born again are dead men walking. Since they have been born only once (physically), they will die twice (physically and eternally in the lake of fire). Those who have been born twice (physically and spiritually) will die only once (physically). When one is born again, they receive a new heart with a desire to live for the glory of God and will praise Him throughout all eternity (Ezekiel 36:26).

Just as man had nothing to do with his physical birth, man has nothing to do with his spiritual birth. It is a sovereign act of God that occurs when the Spirit of God brings forth life as the Word of God is sown in people's hearts (John 3:8; 1 Pet. 1:23). Therefore, if anyone desires to be born again, they must go where the Word of God is faithfully preached so that the imperishable seed, which is the Word of God, can be sown in their hearts (Mat. 13:23).
