In a recorded video statement Pope Francis asserted that evangelicals and Catholics are one, and that it is the devil who has divided the two groups. “Division is the work of the ‘Father of Lies,’ ‘the Father of Discord,’ who does everything possible to keep us divided,” he said. The eight-minute video was for the “Celebration of Christian Unity” event organized by John 17 Ministries out of Pheonix, Ariz., which seeks to unite Christians and Catholics.

The pope has blasphemed the Holy Spirit by attributing the work of Christ to the work of the devil. It is the Lord Jesus who came to divide believers from unbelievers by the truth of His Word (Luke 12:51-53). Born-again Christians and Catholics will always be divided on the essentials of the Gospel, how one is born again, how one is justified, how one is purified of sin, who can mediate between God and man, and the efficacy, sufficiency and necessity of Jesus Christ for salvation. Pope Francis is the one who is doing the work of the devil by rebuilding the religious tower of Babel as he seeks to bring all Christians back home to Rome. Tragically, some evangelicals are jumping on his ecumenical bandwagon and departing from the faith (1 Tim. 4:1-3). This is why our popular Gospel tract: Rome vs. the Bible has become so popular. It gives 13 biblical reasons why the true church must remain sanctified.

The Lord Jesus Christ prayed to the one and only Holy Father in John 17 for unity among all those who were given by Father to the Son and who have kept His Word (verse 6). They were called out of the world by the one and only Gospel of grace when they received His Word by faith (verse 8). True biblical unity can only be attained by those who repent and believe the Gospel and are baptized into one body by the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 12:13). They are all members of the one true church, which has only one Head, the Lord Jesus Christ. They are eager to maintain the unity of the Sprit in the bond of peace (Eph. 4:3). Jesus prayed that His Church would be sanctified by the truth. This means there cannot be unity with those who believe another gospel. Believers cannot be unequally yoked with unbelievers (2 Cor. 6:14).

God's Word declares that anyone who believes another gospel has believed in vain (1 Cor. 15:2). Scripture also condemns those who preach another gospel (Gal. 1:6-9). Pope Francis preaches another gospel and denies that salvation is by grace alone through faith in Christ alone. He preaches salvation is by water baptism, the sacraments, good works, keeping the law and attending the sin offering of a Eucharist Christ on an altar.
If I could send a message to the pope I would call him to repentance and faith in the true Gospel of Jesus Christ. I would plead with him to submit to the supreme authority of Scripture and rescind all of his religious traditions that nullify the Word of God. I would also inform him that there is only one infallible Head of the Church, the one who went to Calvary's cross to die for His church.
