Paul didn’t make the Gospel easy to believe in order to suit those trapped in religious deception. He exalted Christ as the all-sufficient Savior and stripped man of all self-reliance, self-righteousness and self-esteem. Paul knew the true Gospel would provoke the wrath of wicked men and cause offense to those who thought they were good enough. He faithfully preached this Gospel even though it was “foolishness to those who are perishing.” He never avoided the offense of the Gospel even though it resulted in being thrown into prison, getting stoned, whipped and scourged, and being hated everywhere he went. Why doesn’t “today’s gospel” cause persecution? Why does it draw large crowds and tickle ears and build up self-esteem? Why does it produce so many false converts? Because the offense of the Gospel has been removed along with God’s holy hatred of sin. Today’s gospel does not produce godly sorrow for sin that leads to repentance. It does not require bowing to Christ as Lord. It is not the true Gospel that is the power of God for salvation to those who believe it.
