Mary Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), a mystic Polish nun declared a saint by Rome, claimed to have visited Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory and wrote about it in her diaries. In her description of Hell she says, "Most of the souls there are those who disbelieved that there is a Hell." Regarding getting to Heaven she says that one must stay on the narrow path overcoming the rocks and thorns which are symbolic of the sufferings of life because Heaven awaits those who persevere through their suffering.

Believing and being mindful of Hell is not how one is to avoid Hell and suffering and pushing through it is not how we get to Heaven. The scriptures are clear "ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom 3:23) and since without holiness no one will see the Lord (Heb 12:14) every sinner is simply awaiting God's righteous judgement which is Hell. Many like this nun naturally believe that if they do enough good and try hard enough, especially in the midst of suffering, they will merit Heaven but Isaiah 64:6 says otherwise.

A sinner's only hope of Heaven is to be clothed in the righteousness of Christ who atoned (made satisfaction) for the sins of those who repent and believe in what Christ accomplished for them on the cross. We have nothing to contribute in this wonderful demonstration of love by God, we can only receive it, and therefore have no room to boast (see below).

"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation (appeasement) by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in His divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show His righteousness at the present time, so that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. " -Rom 3:23-28
